Cub Scout Pack 139
Cub Scouting celebrated a 75th Birthday this
past year and has been providing a
healthy, character building, fun program for over 25 years here
in Cherryfield. Boys meet in Dens once a week at the Den
Leader's home and work on projects with the monthly theme.
The Dens meet as a Pack Meeting, once a month,
usually at the Church - all the relatives and the public is
invited. Pack Meetings are an evening of fun, games, skits and
jokes. Annual favorites include the Pinewood Derby with
miniature race cars, the Cake Auction with fabulous cakes made
by the boys and their dads/uncles or granddads and the Blue and
Gold Banquet.
We hope to attend Cub Scout Camp at Kathadin Area
Council's Camp Roosevelt in E. Eddington either Pal n Me for
three days or a week of camp for the older boys. Camp is
expensive so we will need to raise the money for those who want
to go.
Special events and outings are planned for each
month. Skiing, tubing, ice fishing and the Bangor Scout Show are
examples.

You could feel the energy and excitment at the 2006 annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby in Cherryfield Saturday night. This perennial event has been a high light in Cub Scouting for over 50 years. This year as the Boy Scouts of America is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Cub program for the younger boys, it seems to many that the world of boys, ages 6 - 10 has dramatically changed since those earlier days of Cubbing. Many adults who support Cub Scouting today are worried about drugs, violence, abuse, neglect and see the Cub program as a safe way for boys to learn some good habits and skills, develop their character and have fun all at the same time. It is disheartening to many of these same adults to see the legal attacks against the scouting programs in this country under the guise of "protecting the constitution" or "fair play" or "separation of church and state", "gender discrimination" etc. The local schools generally don't even allow Cub Activities in the schools because "cults" might want to get into the school if the Cubs are allowed.
What was evident Saturday night
in Cherryfield was a traditional, old fashioned night of
fun. The boys and their dads (or adult partner in our
modern "fractured family age") carve out a small wooden race
car from a standard Pinewood derby Kit that has to meet
certain basic standards of weight/wheel and axle size and
style. These cars are rolled down a long track in pairs and
heats to determine winners. The winners are able to race
their cars for the grand championship in Bangor at the
annual Scout Booth Show of the Katahdin Area Council of the
Boy Scouts of America.
This years race was orchestrated
by Cubmaster Kristine Beal with assistance Assistant Cubmaster Carrie Dow.
Den Dad Boo Endre was the Starter and Pastor Neil Wilson the
head Judge. Pit crew assistance was provided by
fathers George Beal, David Dow .
Trophies went to Webelos Cubs:
Derrick Dow - 1st, Zachery Young 2nd, Michael Rolfe 3rd.
Jacob Endre was the alternate .All the cubs received participation ribbons.
In the sibling race, Logan Beal's car beat Derrick's car and
Derrick in scout fashion gave his trophy to young Logan -
what a guy!.
The "Scout Band"
accompanies the Easter Bunny (Jessica Schrader) - but don't
tell the little kids. Boy Scout Beck Duston plays the
March, Webelos Scout Derrick Dow keeps the beat. The
2004 annual Parade and Easter Egg Hunt was organized by our own Juli Beal
and her sister Lori Barbee with help from the Red Hatters.
The
2004 Scouting
Sunday was celebrated at First Congregational Church in Cherryfield. In this photo, Pastor Joe Palmer demonstrated native
american fire by bow and arrow to Cub Scouts of the Church's pack.
